Magnetic or RFID Cat Feeder System? That! is the Question

MeowSpace® offers the choice between using a Magnetic Door System or RFID (radio frequency identification device) System. The Magnetic System is much less expensive, and unless you have special circumstances which warrant the use of the RFID System, we always suggest going with the Magnetic. Both work equally well.

Cat collar with Magnet attached

The Magnetic System requires your pet to wear a 1-1/2 inch long magnet on its collar. This seems dauntingly heavy to us humans, but it seems even the most feeble of cats have no problem with it. They don’t appear even to know it’s there. I’m reminded of when my son, now 32, was 7, and I used to make him put on a coat, even when he wasn’t cold. He used to tease me by mocking me, “Put on a coat, Corey, Mommy’s cold.” I think we are like that with our furry family members, too. We think, “Oooh, that magnet is way too heavy for my little darling.” In truth, it’s not at all too heavy, and cats and small dogs all over the country are proving it. They manage to make us look like the insanely overprotective parents we are! Trust me, I’m no different with my cats. I assumed it wasn’t going to work, and I was proved wrong immediately.

RFID collar tag

The RFID has a lightweight plastic collar tag that comes with a heavy price tag. We have two cats, one that must eat wet food and the other must eat dry food. They like each other’s food, so we have to use two MeowSpaces. We use the Magnetic with Mitchell, and the RFID with Flopsie, since each must be accessible to only one of the cats.

Each RFID system is programmed only for the cat intended, so you could have several RFID systems and each cat would have only access to their MeowSpace®.

Suffice to say that we want to help you solve your problem in the most cost effective way. The choice is yours!

  1. I am SO EXCITED to have found this—something I’ve been dreaming of as a way to keep my herd of five from indulging in each other’s food. One of my cats is grossly obese and one is too thin—I suspect the hierarchy contributes to this.

With five cats each needing an individual feeding spot, what would you recommend? I’m already feeding Cat #1 (normal size but picky) up on a table, Cats #2 (geriatric/normal), 3 (normal but expanding) and 4 (obese) like to eat together; and Cat #5 (the skinny one) eats several feet away from 2, 3 and 4. Table Cat #1 doesn’t go after other food. Skinny Cat #5 should be isolated so he can eat in peace. Obese Cat #4 won’t go up onto the table unless he has to; Geriatric Cat and Normal But Expanding Cat should probably get their own units.

I was thinking three units would do for starters (for Geriatric, Expanding and Skinny), and Table Cat can stay on his table while Obese eats alone on the floor. One magnet, two RFIDs sound about right? Thank you for letting me think out loud, and for making this dream an impending reality!

    • Hi, thanks for your inquiry. I think you are right on with your assessment. If you find you want an extra MeowSpace later, you can always get it. And…you might get the three and tweak what you do with them, once they’ve started using them.

Glad we can serve you! Have a wonderful holiday season and New Year, and feel free to call or email with any further questions.

      Kind regards,
      Casey
